Hankey Families- the initial RSVP link was not cooperating!  Our technological difficulties are now resolved. Please RSVP below!

Hankey K-8 is excited to be kicking off our annual Global Awareness project focusing on the idea that “HOPE DRIVES ACTION.” Dean Jacobs; world traveler, author and inquirer, will be visiting the campus on Monday, September 26, meeting with students throughout the day to engage them in his “Wondrous Journey- A two year journey that crossed 28 countries.” Dean’s presentations, weaving together uplifting stories and visual images, will help our students create a foundation of hope, upon which they will be taking action throughout the rest of this school year.

Parents- Dean and I cordially invited you to attend a Hope Drives Action Parent Information Night, scheduled for Monday, September 26, from 6:30-7:30 pm in our MPR.  Dean will share his adventures, explain how to take the IB Learner Profiles and bring them alive at home, and light the flames of Hope Drives Action within you as well!

The Mission Viejo Community of Character Youth Committee is hosting an open house on Wednesday night, September 7.  While most of our committee members come from the high schools, we do sometimes have eighth graders and we would like to get more involved.  Our committee members learn valuable project and time management techniques, improve listening and communication skills, and practice leadership in a variety of character-based projects they either develop or for which they choose to contribute.  All of these projects are meant to impact our community in a positive manner and to promote Mission Viejo’s 12 character traits.

We encourage eighth graders and their parents to learn about COC.  Members typically come for community service hours and end up enjoying the experience so much that they continue regardless of the community hours.  Our alumni typically attend top notch universities.

Thank you in advance for your support and assistance.

Welcome back to school!

The staff and I are very excited to begin our 2016-17 school journey with you and your family!  I know that if you are an elementary parent, you may have experienced some confusion on Friday afternoon when the automated calls went out.  Please do not worry!  You can go onto the portal and the information regarding this year's teacher and room number is accurate.  If you are unable to access the portal, do not be concerned.  My staff and I will be out on front and on the blacktop tomorrow beginning at 7:45  with information regarding your child's teacher and room number.  Please look for me, Mrs. Hensley, Mrs. Bougrab or Mrs. Sabina...we can all help you quickly locate your new teacher.

If you are a middle school parent- our new students are meeting with Mrs. Brennan in the MPR (your child should have received an invitation attached to his or her schedule at Registration.) Returning middle school students will assemble at their normal waiting area until the bell rings.  Again, staff members will be out in front helping you.

Please remember that traffic will be heavier than normal, so come a little earlier, and park out on the street.  Numbered spots are reserved for staff members.

Students and Parents:

It has come to my attention that Hankey students who tried to order tickets online this past Monday quickly learned that there were no more tickets available. I regret to inform you that all free UCI basketball tickets were snatched up before most of you had the chance to place an order.

I am truly sorry and regret that I did not pass out the flyers last Friday which was my intention. In all the years I have been teaching math, I have never encountered a “sold out” situation such as this.

Numerous schools experienced the same plight and we have been informed to let you know that while the capacity of free tickets has been reached, tickets will still be sold at the door of the event.

I am sorry for this disappointing news but felt obligated to inform you.

School Loop will be re-activated and available to use from the first day of the new school year.   Parents and students will not be able to register new accounts or login to existing accounts until this time.  School Loop is school-specific, so if you are new to the school, and had an account at a different CUSD school, you will still need to register for an account again through the new school’s website.  The link is on the homepage of the school’s website.  You will need the Student ID Number and an email address to complete this process.

School Loop is a different application to the Parent Portal.  It is available to secondary level parents and students only.   Parents are encouraged to use both applications.

The Parent Portal may be accessed at any time during the school year and parent and student accounts only needs to be established once as they rollover with updated student data each year. Don’t have a portal account? Contact the school office for your child to request the information needed to create an account.

The Parent Portal is only accessible to parents of students in the current 2014-15 school year.  Information on obtaining transcripts for graduated students may be found on the CUSD website.

Please direct any additional questions to your school office which re-opens to the public on Monday, August 11th from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Kirsten Vital to Lead the Highest-Performing, Large School District in California

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO— Kirsten M. Vital has been named the new Superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District, succeeding Dr. Joseph M. Farley who will retire on July 1, 2014, as the leader of Orange County’s second-largest school district.

The Board of Trustees made the selection of Ms. Vital following a closed session meeting on June 14, 2014. A contract is expected to be ratified on Wednesday, June 25 at the Board of Trustees’ regularly scheduled meeting.

Ms. Vital Superintendent comes to CUSD from Alameda Unified School District in Alameda, California, where she is Superintendent.

A seasoned educator, Ms. Vital has held key leadership positions in some of California’s largest districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District and Oakland Unified School District. Vital has been a teacher, an assistant principal, principal, and a college professor.

To find the ideal candidate, the Board of Trustees conducted a nationwide search. The search was guided by a detailed list of leadership criteria, a web-based survey, community forum, and responses from focus groups representing community and district stakeholders.

Board President John M. Alpay expressed his confidence in Vital, "We wanted to ensure that we had the right person for this very important role during this critical time in our District," he said. "Because of her demonstrated track record of success, the Board of Trustees is certain that Kirsten Vital is the right leader who will take our District to new heights of student achievement."

Retiring Superintendent Dr. Joseph M. Farley has been widely praised for his leadership of the District over the last four years. Capistrano Unified schools have consistently ranked in the top one percent of California’s public schools. Successfully weathering the most recent economic recession, the District’s fiscal position was certified as "positive" by the Orange County Department of Education.

With over 4,000 employees, the new Superintendent will take the helm of the largest employer in South Orange County.

Ms. Kirsten M. Vital

Summer School Information for Incoming Freshman

CVHS and SJHHS Students may ONLY take summer school for Health and College & Career Planning (CCP) if their schedule for their freshman year in high school is impacted.

This means, your student is either:

  1. Taking English Accelerated and World History Accelerated and Language/Elective
  2. Taking two specialized electives (ex:  Language and Music)

The information to enroll in Health is available on the district’s website (listed below).  There are two options for summer school health classes – Pacific Coast High School (PCHS) or ACCESS

PCHS - The course offered through PCHS is fully online and offers students a longer time frame to complete the coursework.  The final for this health class must be taken at PCHS (in Tustin) face-to-face with a teacher.  PCHS classes are CSU/UC approved A-G credits

ACCESS - Students who enroll with ACCESS meet with the teacher once a week at one of four site locations (San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, or Mission Viejo).  This class is an 8-week packet-driven course that can be accelerated if the student meets with the teacher more than once a week.  Students take tests with the teacher once per week during their appointment.  ACCESS classes are accredited, but are not CSU or UC approved A-G credits.

To enroll in Health:

  1. Print the forms for either PCHS OR ACCESS.
  2. Complete the form for the option you choose.
  3. Submit paperwork to Kelli Brennan, the middle school's academic advisor.   The academic advisor will verify that the student’s schedule is impacted and then send the completed forms to the district.

Health Forms, Class Explanations, and Class Dates are available at the district website:

I have also attached the forms (choose one) that must be returned to me below.

Please be sure to complete ALL highlighted sections.

PCHS Summer School Application.pdf

ACCESS Application.pdf

*The applications above are PDF files.  If they will not open on your computer, please go to the district website listed above to print the applications*

***The information to enroll in CCP will be provided by Kelli Brennan (Academic Advisor) after May 1st.  Students will need to enroll online with Mrs. Brennan to obtain a confirmation letter.

Happy New Year.  The New Year brings new resolutions, and we wanted to let you know all middle school students will be meeting with either Mrs. Brennan, the academic counselor, Mrs. Pianta, the school counselor, Mrs. Aguilera, Principal, or me. We will be reviewing with your scholar work habit and citizenship goals.  The short meetings will be conducted during PE or electives classes, and will last only 5-10 minutes.  Your scholar will be bringing these goals home to share with you. Please sign the form and have him/her return it to their first period teacher. Thank you in advance for supporting your scholar as they advance through the MYP Middle School program at Carl Hankey...GO HAWKS!

Every day at Hankey across the grades,  we strive to be IB Learners who exhibit the ten Learner Profile attributes.  These are the qualities determined to be the most important factors shaping positive, productive world citizens. The attributes are woven into our IB units, they are the foundation upon which our school's positive behavior system is built, they are even in our Hawk Pride Pledge. Just like a Facebook profile, the IB Learner Profile is a description of our personal qualities, values and characteristics.  Our goal is to be inquirers, risk-takers, thinkers, and communicators, who are knowledgeable, principled, open-minded, caring, balanced and reflective.
As we begin a new year, why not make a family resolution to practice being an IB Learner at home?  One easy way to begin is to down load the attached booklet.  It contains descriptions of each attribute, as well as easy to implement ideas for practicing each attribute.  Make sure you drop by and share your family LP experiences with me!

As the summer heat continues, here’s a quick reminder for you regarding Hankey’s dress code policy.  Please remember that shorts and skirts need to be at least as long as extended fingertips, tank top straps must be at least 3 fingers wide, shirts should adequately cover midriffs, and undergarments cannot be exposed. Garments that are sheer, ripped or torn are also not permitted at school.  Backless shoes and flip flops are great for the beach and home, but at school, students must wear shoes with a back. For more information, please refer to our “Easy Guide to Dress Code Policy” that was handed out at Registration, or click on the attachment to find the policy.

Schoolloop will be re-activated and available to use from the first day of the new school year.   Parents and students will not be able to register new accounts or login to existing accounts until this time.  Schoolloop is school-specific, so if you are new to the school, and had an account at a different CUSD school, you will still need to register for an account again through the new school’s website.  The link is on the homepage of the school’s website.  You will need the Student ID Number and an email address to complete this process.

Schoolloop is a different application to the Parent Portal.  It is available to secondary level parents and students only.   Parents are encouraged to use both applications.

The Parent Portal may be accessed at any time during the school year and parent and student accounts only needs to be established once as they rollover with updated student data each year.

WE ARE IN NEED OF PARENT VOLUNTEERS! Please contact Mrs. Grantz if you are interested ( cmgrantz@capousd.org ).

Please make sure that you sign and return the bottom portion of the "Field Trip Notice" and completely read and fill in the "Field Trip Liability Waiver and Medical Release Form" for the 6th grade field trip.

On the day of the field trip (Friday, May 10), we will leave school at about 8:45 and return by about 2:00 p.m. Students should:

  • bring a water bottle (reusable, if possible)
  • bring a healthy snack & sack lunch with your name on the outside
  • a light jacket or sweatshirt (beach weather can vary)
  • comfortable shoes (we will be walking on trails as well as on the beach and near water - be prepared!)
  • sunscreen and/or hats & sunglasses (students are subject to school and district rules)
  • label everything!!! There are close to 100 students going, so you need to be responsible for yourself and the things you bring. Lightweight backpacks with just the essentials are a good idea.

This is a field trip that goes along with our Ecology unit that we are starting this week.  Students will enjoy a hands-on science day out in the real world with real life issues.  I will be discussing with students what the expectations are and preparing them in class.  All learning is very crucial so that the experience is worthwhile. So please make sure to complete all assignments!

Thank you for your support!

Hankey's Primary Music Program, which is generously supported by  parent donations and PTA, begins next week for all students in grades 2 and 3 for the first semester.  Kindergarteners and 1st graders will start their program in January with the second semester of school.  We are pleased to welcome our new Primary Music teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Baker.  The attached memo introduces both Mrs. Baker and the music program.  Thank you to all our Hankey families who voluntarily donated to Primary Music, and helped PTA ensure that this valuable program remains a vital part of our K-3rd grade curriculum.  If you would still like to make a contribution, any support is greatly appreciated.

We are pleased to announce that CUSD is offering the Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for fall of 2012.   To qualify, students must turn five years old Nov. 2-Dec. 2, 2012.    TK is being offered to students who, due to the kindergarten age rollback, miss the cutoff to enter kindergarten.   This will be the first year of a two-year kindergarten program provided for in the SB 1381 legislation or the Kindergarten Readiness Act 2010. Parents will need to transport their children.  At the end of the TK year, students will matriculate to their home schools for regular kindergarten.

To pre-register for the program, go to CUSD’s website under Parent Links, Transitional Kindergarten and Intent to Register.  The Intent to Register may be emailed directly to the District or delivered to the District office.  Pre-registered students will be assigned to one of three sites throughout the District, Crown Valley, Benedict and Bathgate Elementary Schools.  If you have any questions, please call or email Becky West at bwest@capousd.org  or 949-234-9261.

Dear Parents:

The CUSD Parent Portal is now available for parents of all current K-12 students.  We strongly encourage you to register for a Parent Portal account before school offices close in June, so you are able to take advantage of the new online re-registration system for the 2012-13 school year.   When the window opens in August, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system for re-registration, rather than completing the large, traditional paper packet. Parents will also have the ability at any time during the year to update student demographic and emergency contact records, view real-time daily attendance reports, print report cards and transcripts and also be able to download important documents directly from the portal.

Letters were mailed home the week of February 13 to parents of secondary students with specific information related to Parent Portal account creation. Parents of elementary students received their letters during parent conferences.  The information in the letter includes your student’s ID, home phone, and a unique verification code which will be needed during the portal registration process.  Using the information from the letter, simply logon to abi.capousd.org where you will find directions and a link for creating your Parent Portal account.  There is also a portal link on each school’s homepage. A HELP link is available at abi.capousd.org if you have questions during the registration process.  If you have lost your letter, please contact your school office before the last day of school.

District Offers Programs for Students to Stay Active, Engaged During Break

South Orange County children can take advantage of a full range of enrichment activities and athletic classes through the Capistrano Unified School District community education program, also known as ACE.

“These activities and camps are a great way for students to stay active and engaged both mentally and physically during the summer months,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “Our community education programs offer a number of high quality choices for students and their families.”

Among the diverse offerings are classes in computer game design, cooking, math and video production. Group, private, and semi-private swim lessons are available at four high schools and sports camps for students of all ages will be offered. For more information, call (949) 234-9482 or visit the CUSD ACE website. Classes begin June 25, 2012.

Returning this summer is the UC Irvine Writing Project, a three-week standards-based program that offers students an opportunity to develop their writing skills. An afternoon session that focuses on math and science is also available. Last summer the project attracted more than 300 children. Sessions will be held at Oso Grande and Laguna Niguel elementary schools. To register for the UCI Writing Project, call (949) 824-5922 or visit the project website.

Here is a template that can be sent out to co-workers and  tweaked a little for family & friends. Essentially, you can have people hit forward, then change the names, right-click on the picture to change the picture (make sure it’s not a high-res picture, or the email will be huge).  Customize if you want to have parents match the funds or not. I’ve highlighted all the areas that people may want to change.

I would also like to note that, between three families already using this format and sending out this email, they have already raised $1500, which they will match = $3000, which BP will match = $6,000!!!!!

If we have at least half of our school doing this, we will have the necessary funds to make our school a fabulous IB Candidate, soon to be AUTHORIZED!

Don't forget Passport to IB this weekend!  See you there!

The annual Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey provides the District with a suite of online surveys and reports to collect authentic feedback from students, educators, and parents.  The survey allows us to gather unique data from our stakeholders, conduct a needs assessment, and create a vision for 21stCentury learning. We are also able to use the data to create and inform technology initiatives in CUSD. We are asking parents and stakeholders to take the 2011 Project Tomorrow Speak Up Survey at http://www.tomorrow.org/speakup/. Students will be taking the survey at school. Click on the “Take the Survey Today” tab and follow the survey directions. The survey window closes on December 23, 2011. Results will be shared as soon as they become available. Our secret word is: cusd.

Hankey's 3rd Annual Hawk Trot is Wednesday, November 16th at Cordova Park. The Hawk Trot is one of the primary fundraising events for Hankey's IB program. Our efforts to achieve full IB accreditation and sustain the program rely entirely upon our fundraising efforts. The Hawk Trot is a unique fundraising event that leverages the support of Hankey families and friends who work for British Petroleum. For every donation raised in support of the IB program, BP will match that contribution up to $5,000 per employee. We have 5-6 BP runners scheduled to run in this year's Hawk Trot--that means we have the potential to raise $50,000-$60,000!

Hawk Trot donation packets went home with your child today, so please take the time to read about this upcoming fundraiser. Ask your friends and family members to help support the Hankey IB program. Contact your HR manager at work and ask your company if they will match your donation - it's a great way to double your donation.

The Hawk Trot is an event that will include surprise guests, exciting prizes and a fun-filled family morning, so don't forget to mark it on your calendar to come on out and join in on the festivities!
We appreciate your support!

All schools in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) will be closed on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, due to the power outage affecting Southern Orange and San Diego counties.

The District, like many school districts serviced by San Diego Gas and Electric, has decided to cancel classes for its students. A decision regarding Friday evening sporting events has not yet been made.

“We have no assurance that power will be restored by the time school begins tomorrow morning, and local emergency jurisdictions have advised the District to suspend classes until power is restored,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “We are sorry for the obvious inconvenience to our working families, but it is clearly not proper to have students in school without electricity to power key systems including lights, refrigeration, and computers.”

The decision to close schools was made for a number of reasons, including the lack of power at school sites and the difficulty many staff members will have commuting to work from their homes in Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties. Only the CUSD staff members who have been specifically notified should report to work on Friday, Sept. 9.

Power is expected to be restored in time for school on Monday. For more information, please call the District’s Hotline at (949) 234-5575, which will be open at 7 a.m. or visit the District website at www.capousd.org.

Beginning Monday, October 25, all students who violate school dress code will be given an office referral that will result in an after school detention. They will also be required to contact parents to bring them appropriate clothing. Parents will be notified before students are required to serve the assigned detention. Dress code policies were reviewed with all students in detail this past week in their first period class.  In addition, in order to keep our campus clean those students chewing gum anywhere on campus will also receive office referrals that will result in an after school detention.  Please discuss the importance of adhering to school rules with your middle school children.  Thank you for your support.

Middle school students may not bring in birthday treats to give or share with others.  If students are given gifts at school such as treats, balloons, flowers, etc. they must be left in their 1st period (homeroom) class for pickup after school.  Students may not share their treats with others. Thank you for helping your child follow these guidlines.  This will help ensure that every child's birthday at school is a positive experience.

Hello Hankey Families,

Your PTA and 5th Grade Science Camp are proud to invite you to our first "Mom's Night Out Of The Kitchen" event, planned for this Thursday, December 10 at Pick Up Stix at the Las Flores location, Oso Parkway and Antonio Parkway. Please print out the flyer from Pick Up Stix (located at the Hankey website www.chhawks.schoolloop.com) and present it when you order your dinner. The PTA and Science Camp will receive 20% of your total bill. You can also call ahead, or order online (my personal favorite!), so it is ready when you walk through the door!

This is the first Mom's Night Out we are having at Hankey, but many more are planned in the future. Be on the lookout for your next opportunity to take the night off and let someone else do the cooking for you, while benefiting your school! It's a WIN-WIN for everyone!!! We hope you enjoy your night out of the kitchen, and thank you for eating at Pick Up Stix this Thursday. Don't forget to print and bring along your flyer so we get credit for your order.

It is an all day event, so if you are hungry for lunch, choose Pick Up Stix for two meals. A healthy salad for lunch and some House Special Chicken for dinner.... yum!!!

See you at Pick Up Stix this Thursday!

Carl Hankey Book Fair December 2-9

Our Book Fair will be open:

  • Before school (7:45 to 8:10)
  • Lunch
  • Afterschool (2:20 to 2:50)
  • There will be extended afterschool hours on Wednesday December 2nd and December 9th from 1:20 to 2:15.
New for the Book Fair this year
This year we are implementing a book check out process that will eliminate the typical check out bottleneck that we have experienced in the past.  The problem has been that students were spending too much time in line waiting to purchase their books rather than looking at the books.

This year students will bring the books they want to purchase, along with their money, up to a checkout table.  Volunteers will insure the student has enough money to pay for the books and then place the money in an envelope and put the envelope in a grocery bag along with their books. The bag will be placed on a “to be checked out” table behind the volunteer.

We will have parents at those tables log the transactions and making change.  The change and an invoice will be placed back in the bag along with the books and secured with tape and a sticker that indicates the purchase is complete.

At the end of the day or in the afternoon, volunteers will return the bags back to the classrooms for the kids to take home.

Annual Hankey PTA Bike Rodeo on November 18th!

The PTA is pleased once again to host Hankey’s annual Bike Rodeo with the OC Sheriff's Department on Wednesday, Nov. 18th at 1:15 pm out on the black top area near the school lunch tables.

The event is designed for 2nd through 4th graders and will include an obstacle course, complete with traffic signals, crosswalks, false storefronts and more.  The course will be set up to test each child’s riding and safety skill. In addition, each student’s helmet and bicycle will be inspected for safety and appropriate size.

New for 2009!! – The school will allow 2nd graders who have (1) completed and passed the bicycle safety course, and (2) have submitted a signed parent agreement with the Hankey front office, to bike to school this year!

For additional information, look for the Bike Rodeo flyer coming home with your student later this week.  The flyer is also available for download.

We need parent volunteers to help make this event a success.  If you’re available and would like to volunteer, please contact Lisa Briggs at 582-2957 or briggslm@yahoo.com.

Your opinion matters!!  We invite you to participate in the 2009 Project Tomorrow Speak Up Tech Survey (Oct. 19-Dec. 18). We need your input for the following reasons:
·        The data we receive from the survey helps tremendously as we analyze the technology we have in place and make strategic plans for the future.
·        The survey allows us to collect and report unfiltered feedback from students, parents and teachers on key educational issues.
·        The data serves as a catalyst to stimulate local conversations.
·        Participation raises national awareness about the importance of including the viewpoints of students, parents, and teachers in the education dialogue.

The 2 elementary schools with the top participation in proportion to their school populations win a document camera for their school! We would LOVE to win a doc camera to share among classrooms!
The survey link is:http://www.speakup4schools.org/speakup2009/ Parents, click on the blue Parent icon and begin the survey.
The secret word is cusd

Don't wait until December to do this.  Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today?  Thanks for your input!!

Hawk Trot Update

I wanted to remind you about our upcoming Hawk Trot fundraiser on November 20 which will support the International Baccalaureate program here at Hankey. The Hawk Trot is shaping up to be a great event with several special invited guests and surprises in store.

Please don’t forget that the Hawk Trot will leverage a matching contribution from the British Petroleum (BP) Company. For every dollar that is contributed by Hankey families, BP will contribute an equal amount up to $15,000 total. With BP’s matching contribution, the Hawk Trot is truly the ideal opportunity to secure the funding needed ensure IB becomes a reality at Hankey.

I also wanted to remind you that the deadline for qualifying for the IB Hawk Trot Tee-Shirt is tomorrow, November 6th. Remember, a contribution of at least $30 qualifies you to receive a limited edition Hawk Trot Tee-Shirt to wear during the run on November 20th.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all our Hankey families for your continued support for the IB program. IB is crucial to Hankey’s continued development and growth. Your investment in Hankey’s IB program will reap substantial rewards for all Hankey students and all those who are part of the Hankey community for years to come.

Further details and Information on IB and the Hawk Trot are available for download on the Hankey website.

GO HAWKS!

Artwork for the Reflections Art Competition is due in ONE WEEK, but you have lots of time.

What do you need to do?  Think about “Beauty is…”, take an hour and get creative!

·       For Literature, write a poem or short story about beauty.

·       For Photography, take a few pictures of what is beautiful to you: a perfect wave, a lovely view, your grandma’s face.  You decide!

·       For Fine Art, all you need is a pen, crayons, or markers and a piece of paper.  Draw a picture of what you think is beautiful.

·       For Videography, borrow a video recorder and film something beautiful:  a perfect pitch, birds in the trees, a sunset...  The ideas are endless.

·       For Dance and Music, express your sense of beauty in movement or song.

If you haven’t already, pick up a Student Entry Form and Rules Packet from the front desk.  Bring your completed artwork to the school front desk not later than Friday, October 16th.

The Reflection’s Art Competition is for everyone.

Got Art? Show us what you’ve got!

DID YOU KNOW THESE HEART FACTS?

Your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times.

  • Your heart weighs about as much as a sneaker
  • The heart pumps 5000 to 6000 quarts of blood a day!
  •  If you could stretch your blood vessels end to end, they would reach around the world 4 times
Congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects and are the number one cause of death during the first year of life. Nearly twice as many children die from congenital heart disease in the United States each year as die from all forms of childhood cancers combined.

Every hour
            2          people die from Aids
            11        people die of accidents
            62        people die of cancer
109      people die of heart disease

HOOPS AND JUMP ROPE FOR THE HEART IS COMING TO HANKEY!!!!

WHEN: Oct. 20th during your students PE time.

WHERE: At Hankey School

So what do we do?

Your student is bringing home a flyer about the event. We are assisting in the fight of heart disease. Attached is an online step by step instruction for setting up an online donation site.

More information about the day's events to come!

Together we can help make a difference!!!

Our PTA membership battle is heating up!  Remember, you can check on how the competition is progressing by viewing the tally boards above the glass windows outside Dr. Wilbur’s office.

On the Elementary side:  after remaining nose-to-nose with Mr. Burridge’s class last week, Mrs. Peterson’s class has surged to first place this week with 79% total PTA memberships.  Mr. B is hanging on to 2nd place at 56% and Mrs. Hudson’s class is closing in rapidly on Mr. B with 54% total PTA memberships.  Word on the street is that Ms. Meserve has indicated her class is not out of the race yet.  While she’s back in the pack now, Ms. Meserve vows her class is ready to make a strong charge this week.  The Kindergarten class battle is fierce.  Mrs. Paulicivic is holding on to a 10% lead over Mrs. Moothart’s kids, however, Mrs. Moothart has ensured us that her kids are strong finishers and that they will close that gap in a hurry.

On the Middle School side: This contest is close!  Right now, every grade level has a chance to win.  As of today, the 8th grade class is holding on to a slight lead at 42% PTA memberships.  Either 6th 7th graders could take the lead if they have a good week and can get their PTA membership forms in.

Our PTA membership drive ends on Oct 9th.  Remember, the Hankey PTA is hosting a free popsicle party for each elementary classroom and middle school grade level that finishes with the highest % of PTA memberships.  If everybody at Hankey joins the PTA, then its popsicles for everybody!!!

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year! Hawks are all about health and being fit. I am excited to see all of the returning students and to have met the new Hawks. Let's start this year off right!

After school activity logs are now on school loop and officially begin Monday Sept. 21st. (click on anything blue and something will always open up) Each student is required to be active for 30 min. outside of school, 6 days a week. As recommended by the American Heart Association, everyone should exercise for 60 min. a day. We have a limited amount of time during the day, therefore the additional time needs to be met at home.

Be creative and enjoy your time: skateboard, go to team practice, go surf, dance, go for a walk......the list goes on and on! What other subject requires you to play!!!! It can also be used as a great family time and healthy practice for all.

The 5 a day stands for fruits and vegetables and H2O is for water. This area is to journal your nutrition habits and to get you thinking:)

Here's to your health! - Mrs. Kincaid

Hello Primary Hankey Families,

This is your principal, Scott Wilbur and I am
writing to share some great news! We reached our fundraising goals for primary music next year.

I want to thank our school families for their generosity.  Your contribution and our PTA’s matching funds ensures that Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades will enjoy a full year of music education in 2009-2010.

The benefits of music are numerous and important and primary music would not have been offered next year without your help.  I am very grateful for your support of our students and school.

I hope you are all having a great summer and I look forward to seeing you in September!

Go Hawks!

We are off and running ....literally!  And we are going to finish strong.

Don't forget to support the Governor's Fitness Challenge by making sure your student exercises for at least 30 min. a day, at least 3 days a week. Parents and friends can sign up too and we receive points! (PE requires 30 min. a day, 6 days a week which is line with the recommendations of the American Heart Association and the American Pediatric Association.)

The grades for this week are now published. Please understand, if there is only one grade entered, that grade will be your student's grade for now. As more grades are entered, an average of all of the grades is your student's grade. If your student missed their cardio time this last week, as always, they need to read an article dealing with health, fitness, nutrition, or sports and write a short summary, including why they choose the article in order to make up the points. We discussed that now is the time to take care of your grades in school and not the last two weeks before school is out.

We need donations for the Hawk Fest. Middle School students show your spirit.  Wear your hair in a crazy style this Friday.  No hair dye is allowed!  If students wear their hair with dye in it they will be asked to wash it out!  Do not bring hair gel, spray, etc. to school! Be sure you have "secured" your style before you come on campus.  See you and your "crazy hair" on Friday.  ASB will host a fashion show of CRAZY HAIRSTYLES Friday at lunch.

I am writing to let you know that Carl Hankey's Destination Imagination team, The Razor Sharp Pie Eating Pandas, did an amazing job at Saturday's tournament!  Allison Maynard, Henry Dittrich, Valerie Sierakowski, Caitlin McFann, Jessie McGee and Shelby Capozzoli worked hard, had fun and won 3rd place!!!!!  The team brought in their trophy which you can come and see in the front office.  I would also like to thank the team manager, April Sayegh, for all of her hard work as well.  It was also nice to see Mrs. Diaz our 3rd grade teacher there cheering on our students.  Great Job team and parents.  Carl Hankey was lucky to have such a talented DI team.

GOVERNOR’S CHALLENGE

Please make sure your student is keeping up with exercising at least 30 min. a day, 3 times a week outside of school.  (Physical education at Hankey requires 30 min. per day, 6 days a week under the guidelines of the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association.) Activity logs are used to document student’s progress so turning them in is mandatory. There is no way we will even have a chance to win if every student does not participate. In order to help students remember their logs, they will now be due on a Friday instead of a Monday, the next one being due on the 27th of February.

Parents and friends may also sign up for the Governor’s Challenge if you have not done so…It helps our physical education program gain credit for winning the Governor’s $100,000 challenge.

We are gearing up for our Hop - "Fest" (Mark your calendars for May 29th) and Silent Auction/Basket Raffle.

We are looking for someone to head up the Silent Auction and another person to head up the basket raffle (volunteer(s) from each classroom will put together a basket with donated items).  This event requires organization, time and most of all commitment.   Last year we raised $9500 for music!  The monies raised this year will go to support various activities at the school.

Time is short, as letters need to be sent to prospective companies ASAP.  If you'd like to head this up, we'd like to hear from you!  Please email your interest to carlhankeypta@sbcglobal.net.    Don't let this fundraising opportunity go by.
